show tonight. write up sometime this week.
didn’t make it to the bug haus show the other day, but went to Dad’s House/Girl Cave The Prom Is Tomorrow party. write up should be up either tomorrow or the next day.
this last Friday the boys at the Side Boob had a show. the line up was out-of-towner’s Monsters In The Closet featuring Navi’s drummer Kyle, Midair, Fight Cloud, and Houdan the Mystic to end the night.
first up was Monsters in the Closet. i showed up late and missed the beginning of their set, but i’ve known these guys for a couple of years and they seem to have a pretty solid theme with their music. tonight was nothing different. they had an improv jam session with a good vibe that looked like everyone in the crowd was enjoying what they were hearing.
next up was Midair, which is always a good show. their lineup was; “upper lower middle class” “insect politics” “the woods was our sadness” “biocarbon amalgamate” “space hero vs. dr lizardo” and they finished up with “little wendy” These are a bunch of great guys that seem to know what they’re doing in the music game and I have a feeling they’ll be around for a while.
this was my first time seeing Fight Cloud, and as a friend said, who described them simply as, “dopeness,” i have to say I was extremely impressed with what i saw, and the description was spot on. their set list was “men with mustaches” “add the octopus” “ninja” “interlude” “laughing with enemies” “the very hungry earthworm” “asphalt kids.” there whole set was a crowd pleaser, and there was tons of energy. The floor was shaking the entire time. Definitely a must see act
last up was Houdan the Mystic, one of my favorites. their set was cut short, on account of the Federales showed up and shut it dowb, which seems to be a reoccurring theme at Houdan shows. they played their new song “Unneccisi-Gary Busey” and “Sleeping or Worse” from their EP. Words from the crew themselves, “the cops hate us!” Will we be able to see a full Houdan the Mystic set soon? Just let it happen RVAPD, they’re not as bad as you think.

there might be a Cinco De Mayo house show tonight at our boy Mijail’s house. possibly Eurotics and Wolf//Goat playing. maybe more, I’ll keep it posted
Last night the Cellar Door held an great show with RVA’s own Wolf//Goat, Spacemonsters and Heavy Midgets, and Blacksburg’s Hoop Dreams came to join in on the fun. I arrived to the bar around 10:00, and the crowd was growing slowly but surely by then. Around 10:30, the bar was packed to maximum capacity, and Spacemonsters started setting up to go on around 11. This was the first time I had heard Spacemonsters play, and I will have to say i enjoyed what they had to offer. They started off the set with an uptempo, reverb filled dance track, and kept it coming for the next hour or so, until the end when they slowed things down and brought us back with a slow surf rock song. Next up was Wolf//Goat, a great group of guys who always put on a fantastic show. they started off with their song “Flesh Tones,” a song that will have you singing along in no time filled with banjo riffs and a bouncy piano accompaniment to get the crowd moving. Next up in the set was “Herojuana,” a slow jam from these boys, with violin and a solid banjo overlay, until Ben Wolf lets us know we’ll “only be happy when you’re lifeless and free, i’ll only be happy when you’re right next to me.” And the crowd seems to know this because they’re all looking happy, standing next to one another, toasting each others drinks and singing along. Around this time I heard word that the venue might actually be over capacity, and it looked like it just might have been, people were standing in the booth’s, and there was minimal room to get to and from the bar itself. The next song was “Madness Is Sanity,” a little bit more uptempo from the last, building up the energy of the crowd. People in the crowd are dancing around, spilling beer on each other and having a good time. Next up is their song “Young Fall,” with its emotionally driven ohhh’s, and the question of “what the fuck happened?” the crowd starts to sing along when they reach the break and everyone has been perpetually moving since the beginning of this set. The owner then came up to the mic, and told us that this would be the last song, on account that the smoke machine they were using had set off the fire alarms, and the police/fire department were on their way. Last up was “Lobocabra,” or as most people know it “The Naked Song.” This seemed to be the crowds favorite, the floor got much more slick, as the number of beers getting spilled and thrown around grew higher and higher, when the gang vocals came Ben then passed the mic off to the crowd to let them finish off the song, and he took off for a crowd surfing session. the crowd then moved outside by order of the fire department, where Wolf//Goat handed out copies of their demo, The//Day//Tripper//Demo, which ran out fast. The last two bands were disappointed that they weren’t going to play, and word that a possible venue change to the Pleasure Dungeon made its way around the crowd, but to no avail. Eventually everyone decided to go their separate ways and call it a night.
edit: probably tomorrow sometime. shower and more beer is needed in my life.
or hit up the Cellar Door for Wolf//Goat, Hoop Dreams, Heavy Midgets, and Spacemonsters. its going to be a great show. everyone should come out!
